Generally, as an esthetician, I’m against getting a tan or other tanning services (such as tanning beds) because the UVA and UVB rays from the sun are going to make hyperpigmentation and black dark spots are going to appear on the skin.
Furthermore, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, this hyperpigmentation and black spots actually indicate damage to the skin’s DNA.
Enough damage to the skin caused by UVA and UVB rays can eventually lead to problems such as prematurely aged skin, wrinkles, and worst of all, skin cancer.
So be very careful if you want to get a tan. Please make sure that you think about the risks that come with getting one.
As a substitute for a tan, I’ve occasionally used tanning spray instead. You can wash it away and, boom, no harm to your skin at all. So reaching for that tanning spray will most likely help you out in the long term and avoid skin damage!
But…if you really insist on getting a tan, using sunscreen would not be necessary because sunscreen will work against the tanning and only makes the session you need longer.
