Q: “What is the best sunscreen that does not make you too white? I look like a geisha when I use sunscreen.”

Looking like a geisha is not necessarily the worst problem in the world. They’re beautiful!

But seriously, the white color of sunscreen is due to the amount of zinc in the product.

As a matter of fact, the first and most important ingredient in sunscreens should be zinc and you should make sure whatever brand you are using has zinc in it as the first or second active ingredient.

If your sunscreen does NOT have zinc in it as one of the primary ingredients, make sure to find a brand that DOES have it.

Why Is Zinc Oxide Important in Sunscreen? says that zinc blocks UVA and UVB rays, as well as other UV radiation. It’s also really gentle on the skin.

It’s a great addition to your sunscreen preparation routine.

If your skin is prepared with the proper serum and moisturizer, it won’t get too white. So if you’re afraid of looking like a ghost, make sure you are setting up properly.

Also, another solution is using a tinted sunscreen or foundation over your sunscreen. Tinted sunscreen gives your skin a healthy evening-style glow without sacrificing the sunscreen’s ability to block UVA and UVB radiation.

But use your zinc sunscreen no matter what. Protecting yourself from the sun and its radiation will help keep your skin healthy for as long as possible.
